Hugh Jackman and Emma Watson have not worked together, dated, or shown up at the same event in years, and nothing on either of their schedules is about to change that. What they do share this year is timing. Both are making very public, very different decisions about how much of their lives to put on display, and 2026 is making it easier than usual to compare which approach actually works.

Jackman is betting on being seen
His personal life is the clearest example. Jackman finalized his divorce from Deborra-Lee Furness last year, ending a 27-year marriage, then went public with Broadway performer Sutton Foster at a red carpet premiere last October, the kind of appearance nobody ends up at by accident. By May, the two were photographed together again at the Met Gala.
In June, he signed on to play Long John Silver in a Ridley Scott adaptation of Treasure Island. The project is not locked in yet. “Fingers crossed we get it up and we get going,” he told DiscussingFilm around the same time. Disney’s own 20th Century Studios reportedly passed on it, mainly because it did not want to compete with its own Pirates of the Caribbean plans.
The two films that did get made this year landed on opposite ends of the spectrum. The Sheep Detectives, an Amazon MGM comedy where Jackman plays a shepherd solving his own murder with help from his flock, opened in May and has already pulled in more than $120 million worldwide, his best non-Marvel opening in a decade. The Death of Robin Hood, an A24 drama directed by Michael Sarnoski that Jackman also produced and clearly treated as the bigger artistic swing, opened weeks later to a $2.6 million debut against a $20 million budget, and the reviews were mixed. It earned a C+ CinemaScore. So far, the smaller project has drawn the far bigger audience.
Watson is betting on staying almost out of view
Watson’s year looks close to the opposite. Her relationship with Gonzalo Hevia Baillรจres, a Mexican entrepreneur who runs the investment firm HBeyond and is the grandson of the late mining billionaire Alberto Baillรจres, became public through someone else’s camera rather than any announcement of her own. The two were first seen together in Courchevel late last year, and the relationship was effectively confirmed in March when they were photographed kissing at an airport in Mexico. Watson has never confirmed it herself.
She co-founded the gin brand Renais with her brother Alex in 2023, and while the company raised roughly ยฃ5 million in early 2025 to expand into the US, Alex is the one running it day to day. She has also been at Oxford since 2023, where she has rowed as coxswain for her college crew, about as far from a red carpet as a public appearance gets.
The closest thing to an actual public moment came on June 22, when she spoke at a Royal Foundation climate forum in London alongside Prince William and Benedict Cumberbatch. She used her time on stage to argue that fashion produces more emissions than aviation. It was one of only a handful of appearances she has made all year.
Neither year has gone quite the way the strategy behind it would suggest. Jackman’s most visible project of the year still opened soft, and Watson’s relationship went public without her ever announcing it herself. The Death of Robin Hood gets a second chance on digital July 21. Watson has nothing scheduled that has been made public. If this year is any guide, whatever she does next will become news because someone else happens to catch it, not because she announces it.
