No golf outlet has ever confirmed Suzanne Hannemann’s age or named her job. Every profile written about her since her 2022 wedding to Fred Couples has landed on the same blank space. The fullest written account of her family comes from an obituary that has nothing to do with golf.
In August 2013, a Torrance, California, newspaper printed a notice for a 71-year-old elementary school teacher named Carolyn Radcliffe. She was survived by two children: a son named Kris, and a daughter listed as Suzanne Radcliffe-Hannemann. That was more than eight years before anyone reading it had reason to connect the name to golf.

A blind date at a flag football game
Couples has told this story more than once. He and Suzanne were set up on a blind date in 2015. The setting was a flag football game for her son, Hunter.
“We watched Hunter throw the rock around. I still have the video of that,” Couples said. What stuck with him, by his own account, was less Suzanne than her son’s arm.
That same year, she was already appearing in photo galleries at the 2015 Presidents Cup in South Korea, where Couples served as a U.S. captain’s assistant, a role he held again in 2017, 2019 and 2022.
By January 2022, a month before the wedding, PGA Tour’s own website was already calling her his fiancรฉe. The mention came in an unrelated story about golfer Kramer Hickok’s playoff run at the 2021 Travelers Championship, which Couples and Suzanne had watched together. “Suzanne and I were sitting there watching and she knows him, too,” he said. “And it was like, can you believe this?”
The wedding Fred Couples said would never happen
Couples had already been married and widowed twice by the time he met Suzanne. His first wife, Deborah, whom he met as a student at the University of Houston, divorced him in 1993. She died by suicide in 2001. His second wife, Thais Baker, died of breast cancer in 2009 while the two were estranged. For years afterward, Couples told people plainly that he was done getting married.
He changed his mind on February 22, 2022, a date the two picked partly because 2-22-22 reads the same forward and back. The ceremony was small, held in a friend’s oceanfront backyard in California. Couples wore Asics sneakers to his own wedding. “Her pastor from Torrance came and married us,” he said, announcing the news the following month from the Hoag Classic, the Newport Beach tournament that opened his PGA Tour Champions season.
Her son is now part of one of golf’s family events
Suzanne and Fred don’t have children together, but her son from an earlier relationship has become one of the more visible parts of the marriage. Hunter Hannemann grew up playing volleyball, not golf. He’s an outside hitter for Corona del Mar High School in Newport Beach, and he picked up a golf club for the first time around age 10, a couple of years after his mother and Couples got serious.
In December 2024, Couples made his PNC Championship debut with Hunter as his partner, paired with Nelly Korda and her father, Petr. The team finished tied for 19th. At the pre-tournament press conference, a reporter asked Hunter whether he’d known who Fred Couples was when his mother started dating him. He didn’t dress up the answer.
“I had no clue. I don’t think I watched a single minute of golf in my life before he came in. But eventually, I started realizing he’s a big deal and he can play.”
The two returned for a second PNC Championship together in December 2025.
The job that has never been named
For someone whose son now fields questions from national reporters, Suzanne remains almost entirely undocumented outside her husband’s world. Search her name online and the guesses about her career pile up fast:
- A businesswoman
- A former talent agent
- A nurse
- A model
Each claim floats free of any named source, and several openly contradict each other. Wedding writeups, golf outlets, even interviews Couples himself has given: none of them name her employer, her industry, or her job title.
A fashion deal that started with a favor for his wife
The most recent addition to the public record has nothing to do with a golf swing. In December 2025, Malbon Golf signed Couples as a sponsored ambassador, joining a roster that already included Jason Day and Charley Hull.
Malbon co-founder Stephen Malbon later told Skratch Golf that the deal didn’t start with a pitch meeting. It started months earlier, when Couples asked Malbon to dress Suzanne for the July 2025 premiere of Netflix’s Happy Gilmore 2 in New York, where Couples had a small role. Only afterward did Couples ask Malbon to dress him too.
By the time Couples made his official Malbon debut at the 2025 PNC Championship, Hunter was wearing the brand’s logo on the course as well.
What else that obituary said
More than twelve years passed between that obituary and the Malbon deal. In that time, her son has answered more questions from reporters than she ever has.
That 2013 notice in the Daily Breeze said more than who survived her. It listed a Pepperdine degree, a career teaching elementary school, and the family’s church in Torrance. None of it mentioned golf. It didn’t need to.
